The Coming of Conan

Conan the Barbarian issue #1 introduces the young, brash Cimmerian who will become a legend. The story features battles, sorcery, and hints of Conan's destiny. Conan is introduced as a youthful, yet formidable warrior, embodying both raw strength and cunning survival instincts. The story takes place in the Hyborean Age -- a mythical prehistoric era filled with warring kingdoms, ancient magic, and heroic adventures. Conan is drawn into a plot with two warring factions. As you read the issue, take note of his motivations and how he balances survival instincts with moments of compassion or strategy. He demonstrates brutality, but also honor. Does he adhere to a code? Or is he merely pragmatic?

Plot Summary

1. The Battle Begins

Conan is introduced amid the chaos of war, fighting alongside the Aesir warriors against their Vanir foes in the cold expanse of Aesgaard. His skill as a fighter and sharp reflexes are on full display when he saves the life of Olav, the Aesir leader. This act of bravery shows Conan’s pragmatic approach to survival: he is fighting not for honor or loyalty but because the Aesir pay better. This sets the tone for his characterization as a mercenary with a strong sense of self-interest.

2. Treachery Among the Vanir

Volff and Horthar, leaders among the Vanir, desert their comrades and stumble upon the cavern of Sharkosh, a mysterious shaman. In their desperation, they bargain with Sharkosh, offering to capture a young, strong warrior in exchange for magical assistance. Sharkosh’s eerie presence and the tension-filled negotiations highlight the blend of sorcery and treachery central to the Hyborian Age.

3. Conan’s Capture

Conan is ambushed by winged demonic creatures summoned by Sharkosh’s dark magic. Awakening in a wooden cage, he meets Tara, Sharkosh’s enigmatic assistant, who tends to him while hinting at the mystical power of the Star Stone, Sharkosh’s source of strength. The tension builds as Conan observes his surroundings and formulates his escape, emphasizing his resourcefulness and resilience.

4. Visions of the Past and Future

In a pivotal scene, Sharkosh uses the Star Stone to reveal Conan’s destiny:
  • Past: Conan’s birth during a bloody battlefield.
  • Future: His rise to kingship in a powerful Hyborian nation and the inevitable collapse of the Hyborian Age.
  • Far Future: Humanity’s transition from barbarism to civilization and even the advent of the Space Age. This sequence underscores the themes of fate, destiny, and the cyclical nature of history. Sharkosh, overwhelmed by the vast cosmic truths he glimpses, is driven to madness—a fitting warning about the danger of unchecked knowledge.

5. Conan’s Escape

Using the chaos caused by Sharkosh’s breakdown, Conan destroys the Star Stone, triggering a catastrophic collapse of the cavern. The demonic creatures vanish, and Tara reveals her true nature: a being from another dimension transformed by Sharkosh’s power. As she fades away, she cryptically tells Conan he is “fair,” adding a layer of mystery to her character and Conan’s potential.

6. A Hero Emerges

With Tara’s body in his arms, Conan reflects on the surreal and perilous events. Haunting visions of his destiny linger, portraying a conflicted yet determined warrior who will rise to legendary status.

Themes and Analysis

1. Heroic Beginnings

Conan’s combination of physical prowess, sharp wit, and innate decency is showcased. His pragmatic yet compassionate actions set the foundation for his evolution into a legendary hero.

2. Fate and Free Will

The Star Stone’s visions reveal Conan’s grand destiny, but his choices and defiance of Sharkosh’s magic demonstrate his capacity to shape his path.

3. Worldbuilding

Roy Thomas integrates Howardian lore with new elements: The Aesir and Vanir conflict mirrors Norse mythology. The Star Stone’s revelations connect Conan’s story to a larger, cyclical history of humanity.
